I'm just going to come out and say this now.. I am forever finding new films that I LOVE the look of, so this list will just continue to grow. Every. Single. Day! Definitely check back if you're wondering what to go and catch next at your local cinema as there will most probably be something completely different to what you saw last time!
So HEY! Jess here! Ive forever been into going out and watching different movies, but since I started working at my local independent cinema its become more of a way of life for me. OBVIOUSLY I am always going to be one of the first to see a new Disney picture when it hits the big screen but I am into a lot more genres of films and will always tag along with all my friends to whatever they're going to see.
BUT HERE WE GO, Grab a drink and get ready to watch some trailers! Here's EVERYTHING I've currently seen and thought 'Im gonna go watch that!'
I have to write a list else I'll forget .. anyone else?
Films available to watch now:
Bliss (Available on Amazon Prime) (15)
Synopsis: Bliss is a mind-bending love story following Greg (Owen Wilson) who, after recently being divorced and then fired, meets the mysterious Isabel (Salma Hayek), a woman living on the streets and convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is just a computer simulation. Doubtful at first, Greg eventually discovers there may be some truth to Isabel’s wild conspiracy.
I love any film that makes me think or gives me something to work out. A 'How did they get there' or a 'whats the solution to that puzzle'.. this is a 100% a 'which bit is actually real' problem to solve and that just gives me the need to know! I love films that only give you key pieces of information and let you work out the riddle as you go through. This is definitely on my watch at home list. I also do quite like a good Owen Wilson movie.
Films Out in May/June:
Cruella (In cinemas and on Premium Access Disney +) (12A)
Synopsis: Estella is a young and clever grifter who's determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella.
I AM SO EXCITED! Any Disney film trailer makes me so excited but any villain backstory is soooooooo intriguing in my opinion because theres so many angles they could take with all of them. The cast in this also looks great so I cannot wait to see what they do with this iconic character!
Edit: Weve now seen this and Loved it! A few plot holes but as a whole it was FABULOUS DARLING.
A Quiet Place 2 (15)
Synopsis: Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.
I've waited SOOO long for this film! I was meant to be seeing this for my birthday in 2020 but obviously then cinemas closed and therefore this picture got pushed to 2021... But I really liked the premise and the execution of A Quiet Place 1, as its was the first film of this style I had seen and the silence really made you experience the tension the characters felt. So I'm really interested to see what the sequel has to offer.
Mainstream (15)
Synopsis: Stuck working as a bartender at a Hollywood comedy club with her best friend and sometime-lover Jake, Frankie questions what today’s society truly values. When she encounters the mysterious Link, she is inspired to film him and upload his anti-commerce rants. With Jake onboard, this trio of outsiders quickly rises to internet stardom. But when manager Mark starts making demands to bring in more money, and as she watches Link turn into everything he once denounced, Frankie is faced with the question – is she also becoming the monster she helped create?
After knowing Andrew Garfield mainly as Spiderman, this trailer really gives me villain vibes and I feel like he would make a great Marvel/DC Villain. After doing Youtube myself now for a while, I think I'm drawn to this film. Its so easy to get so engulfed into this world that this film is so on brand and relevant to the times, I just hope they did it right.
Together Together (15)
Synopsis: A young loner becomes a surrogate mother for a single, middle-aged man who wants a child. Their unexpected relationship soon challenges their perceptions of connection, boundaries and the particulars of love.
This sounds so sweet! With relationships and the world becoming way more open and diverse (HURRAY!), I am so happy that the film industry is catching up and making more films about families that aren't just the traditional Mum, Dad and Kids. The storyline of this makes me so hopeful that people out there can find comfort in their own feelings and know that anything and everything is okay and normal when it comes to family. (I also can 100% see this actually being Andy from The Office. US in the future)
In The Heights (PG)
Synopsis: Lights up on Washington Heights... The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
Okay, I must admit, I love musicals but I really don't have that much knowledge on existing stage shows, so I had no idea what this was until my friend saw the poster and go so excited it was being turned into a film. As soon as I watched the trailer I knew it was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda and since seeing the cast, I'm even more excited as its full of broadway actors from Rent, Matilda and Hamilton ie.Anthony Ramos.
Luca (Exclusively on Disney+ June 18th) (PG)
Synopsis: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water's surface.
I could tell this was Pixar straight away! Could a film look any more cute and harmless but be funny and visually amazing?! Im so excited. AND its going to be free with Disney+ subscription, not be put on premier access which is AWESOME! I love anything about mythical creatures so after Onward, I think this is a great looking film. AND who doesn't love a seaside town, especially set in the Italian Riviera. Pixar's never let me down - with an original (added because I remembered Cars 2..) - yet and I don't think this will either.
Edit: I have now watched this and it was beautiful! It was fun and engaging but really gave me all the feels! I loved it!!.. and I loved that it didnt go to premier access too!!
Films Out in July:
Space Jam 2 (U)
Synopsis: Basketball superstar LeBron James teams up with the Looney Tunes gang to defeat the Goon Squad and save his son.
If you've never seen Space Jam - did you even have a childhood? But seriously, If you haven't, go and watch it now as it was a 90s classic! (GUYS IVE JUST GOOGLED AND IT CAME OUT THE DAY I WAS BORN! WOO!) I loved Looney Tunes TV show, it was always on and it just is the animation I grew up with. So Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (another you should check out) were my favourite as they combined real life actors into the world with the crazy cartoon characters. I really hope this isn't another film that just tarnishes the franchise by trying to bring it back. If it works though... It'll be amazing.
Black Widow (12A)
Synopsis: At birth the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative.
Marvel as a company has made a really good money making machine. As any fan of the Avengers, now has to see EVERY MOVIE to keep up to date for the next, but the best part is, we want to! Any Marvel movie always is packed with storyline and action that you never tend to get bored and that makes them way more appealing to follow along with. The fact that every release features a character you've seen and got attached to before, makes their job as film makers way easier too as you already have the connection that in any completely fresh franchise, they'd have to build.
Essentially, I am one of those fans of Marvel and I cant wait for us to find out more about Agent Romanova and her life before Infinity War and End Game.
Edit: We are so glad we watched this on the big screen as it was such a action packed viewing. It was such a great addition to the MCU timeline and fills the gap that we had time wise, perfectly!
Old (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: A thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly reducing their entire lives into a single day.
Who doesn't know the name M. Night Shyamalan? Well this is produced and directed by him! I've been really into his films since I watched The Village as a teen (even if I've still not seen Sixth Sense..) and you remember me saying about Bliss that I love anything that makes you think... well this is ALL THAT.
Mysterious thrillers are the best, not too much gore, not too much violence, but problem solving and drama is 100% my favourite genre after animation. If anyone knows any great animated mystery thrillers - send them my way!
Jungle Cruise (12A)
Synopsis: Dr. Lily Houghton enlists the aid of wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff to take her down the Amazon in his ramshackle boat. Together, they search for an ancient tree that holds the power to heal -- a discovery that will change the future of medicine.
Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in a film about a classic Disney Parks ride... what could be better? Oh yeah, chuck in the humour of Jack Whitehall! Although me and Tom haven't been on the Jungle Cruise in Florida, I'm excited for the film, as we do know the general story on the ride because of vlogs. Also, I don't know if its the fact its Dwayne, but if you didnt put sound or a name to this trailer I'd have guessed Jumanji 3... and I loved those remakes!
Edit: I LOVED watching this! The cast was perfect and the storyline kept me hooked the whole way through. It had a great balance of suspense and humour that blended in with the action amazingly! A must watch for anyone who loves films like Pirates of the Caribbean.
The French Dispatch (15)
Synopsis: THE FRENCH DISPATCH brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictional 20th-century French city.
I have no idea what to expect from this film. It's one I have come across while searching for trailers of other films, but even the trailer hooked me in, so I am curious to see whether the film will do the same. I love the idea of it going in and out of its own scenes as they write about them, so you don't just get a film about a bunch of authors at a newspaper but a bunch of mini films too which are their articles. The cast also looks stellar too, with familiar faces: Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Owen Wilson and Saoirse Ronan. (Which is pronounced Sur-Sha if you have ever wondered - like me!)
The Tomorrow War (Amazon Prime from July 2nd) (12A)
Synopsis: The world is stunned when a group of time travellers arrive from the year 2051 with a urgent message: 30 years in the future mankind is losing a war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight.
Im surprised noone has thought of this concept before, but I'm glad Chris Pratt is the one to be in it. His natural sense of humour always makes anything more enjoyable even while keeping the seriousness of the subject. I dont currently have Amazon Prime, but I've added it to my list to remind myself to watch it, as well as letting you all know about it!
Films Out in August:
Still Water (Cert TBC could be 12A or 15)
Synopsis: An American oil-rig roughneck travels to Marseille, France, to visit his estranged daughter, in prison for a murder she claims she didn't commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences and a complicated legal system, he soon builds a new life for himself as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate her.
Now films like this aren't usually on my definitely list, they're more like my 'when it comes to tv or steaming' list, but I have grown up watching Abigail Breslin that I am intrigued to see what she is like in a film as serious as this and being a adult. I mean Matt Damon is a massive hit or miss when it comes to movies he chooses but I'm curious how they go about this Daddy-Daughter action film.
Respect (12A)
Synopsis: Aretha Franklin sings in her father's church choir as a child and grows up to become an international musical superstar and legend.
I really don't think I have to say too much about this one. After the success of Taron Egerton in Rocketman and Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, this film is coming at the perfect time and I dont know how they can go wrong. Jennifer Hudson is going to make an amazing Aretha Franklin and I have full faith that this movie is going to be just as big a sensation, if not more.
Profile (R - usually translated into 15)
Synopsis: An undercover British journalist risks her life by infiltrating militant extremist groups online.
Searching (2018) was one of my favourite films of that year, purely down to this different way of creating a film. So much so I'm going to put its trailer underneath as
I urge you to go watch it. No shock its another mystery thriller haha! Profile has the same producer and I'm excited to watch as they've taken it too a whole new serious realistic level.
Free Guy (15)
Synopsis:A bank teller called Guy realizes he is a background character in an open world video game called Free City that will soon go offline.
This ones much more of a lighter note and I'm so glad they cast Ryan Reynolds as it SCREAMS his personality and characteristics! Its almost like they wrote this with him in mind to lead. The cast is the best of 2019, with Jodie Comer, Joe Keery and the weirdly wonderful Taika Waititi. But any film about video games really have to sell it to me, yet merely making a film about a background character who figures he's exactly that, I'm already wanting to know more.
Also - why did they never think of giving Killing Eve a video game before, what a great anger management tool for her... haha
The Last Letter from your Lover
Synopsis: A pair of interwoven stories, set in the past and present, follow an ambitious journalist determined to solve the mystery of a forbidden love affair at the center of a trove of secret love letters from 1965.
This is such a homage to the 2010 romance of Letters to Juliet, which I loved, but in a lovely mystery that isn't all about the main characters. Im excited to watch Felicity Jones in more of a present day film again too.
Edit: Watched! This was so sweet and just a classic romance. It had the odd joke and wasn't totally serious but was just lovely and made you feel happy after it had finished.
Films Out in September:
Venom 2: Let there be Carnage (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: Over a year after the events of Venom (2018), investigative journalist Eddie Brock struggles to adjust to life as the host of the alien symbiote Venom, which grants him super-human abilities in order to be a lethal vigilante. Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.
Venom was a very 50/50 split with people who loved it and hated it. I liked it, but I'm not massively into the comics like some people are but I enjoy the spiderman universe anyway , so I think I appreciated it as a film, rather than a product of something else. So I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. Venom was a (15) so I'm hoping for that rating for this to keep the same level of action and thriller as the first.
No Time to Die
Synopsis: Recruited to rescue a kidnapped scientist, globe-trotting spy James Bond finds himself hot on the trail of a mysterious villain, who's armed with a dangerous new technology.
The most highly anticipated film of 2021 as it was meant to be released April 2020. Im not a huge James Bond girl but I thought with all the hype and waiting, it deserved to be on this list. Do you like James Bond? I was brought up with the old ones but I've kind of dropped off with the newer ones.
The Duke
Synopsis: In 1961, a 60-year-old taxi driver steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. He sends ransom notes saying that he will return the painting if the government invests more in care for the elderly.
This looks so sweet. I love Jim Broadbent too so I can't wait to see this film which to me, just seems to be about people who are happy to do anything to try and help everyone.
Films Out in October:
Last Night in Soho (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: Eloise, a young woman with a passion for fashion design and a strange sixth sense, mysteriously finds herself transported back in time to 1966 London in the body of her idol, a singer named Sandy. While in Sandy's body, she enters into a romantic relationship, but the city in the 1960s is not what it appears to be and the past and present seem to fall apart with shady and horrifying consequences.
Are you seeing a theme yet? Mystery Thriller's that aren't too horrory just pull me in with the intrigue. I just need to know. My only hope for them is that theyre not too predictable. I dont mind when I predict it, but could be wrong, but turn out to be right.. as I dont know. Just when films are so obvious the whole way through, it doesn't keep me hooked and thats what I love! Now this film in particular Im so excited for as I loved Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queens Gambit tv show (highly recommend), so Im looking forward to seeing her in a similar kind of role but in a film rather than a 10 episode show.
Dear Evan Hansen (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: A high school senior suffers from social anxiety disorder which leads him to struggle at school. His journey of self-discovery and acceptance begins following the suicide of a fellow classmate.
My first encounter with Dear Evan Hansen was in my car. I'd heard of the musical so thought I'd put the soundtrack on in my car on the way back from somewhere one day, and I ended up just tearing up purely to the songs. I have never seen the show, never have seen the storyline before, this is purely the music. Its just so moving that I am desperate to see the show and now also the film too. Every time the trailer is on, I watch it without even meaning to. I just cant wait to see it. Ben Platt stared in the Broadway show and it excites me even more to see him star in the film. If you are unsure about whether to watch it because of the subject matter, please listen to the music and see how you feel as it is so much about support and being there for each other.
Eternals (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants.
HOW had I not heard about this Marvel film?! Its set after End Game so its the next in the time line after Black Widow and looks like a whole new era of Marvel Heroes! This trailer gives me Doctor Strange, Azguard, Wonder Woman vibes but I love all of those things so I cannot wait for this! Im excited to see as more trailers are released. (I will keep this as the most up to date trailer)
Films Out in November:
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (12A)
Synopsis: When a single mother and her two children move to a new town, they soon discover that they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather's secret legacy.
WHO YOU GONNA CALL?!
Fingers crossed, just like Space Jam 2, this reboot doesn't tarnish the name Ghostbusters. The cast is very current and has great potential to carry out and make this great. Yet again this is another film that got trailered and then pushed due to the pandemic so fingers crossed the film lives up to expectations, a long 2 years after this trailer was released.
Encanto
Synopsis: A girl in Colombia faces the frustration of being the only member of her family who doesn't have magical powers.
Disney is Disney- Im going to love the look of it but I hope this is amazing. Coco is my favourite and this gives me lots of magical vibes like thats Im very hopeful.
Films Out in December:
Spiderman 3: No Way Home
Synopsis: For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange, the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
How much like Into the Spiderverse does this look? And just to clarify- I loved that movie! I love all the nods to the old films within this trailer and the cheekiness of Doctor Strange so CANNOT WAIT to watch this end to the Spiderman Trilogy!
The Kings Man (15)
Synopsis: As a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man and his protégé must race against time to stop them.
Kingsman with Colin Firth and Taron Egerton is one of my favourite action films and the sequel was just as good. Such a clever mix of humour and action in a very sophisticated manor, so this prequel makes me so happy. I love a origin/ back story, so seeing how the whole of the first two films came to be is going to be great.
West Side Story (CERT TBC)
Synopsis: An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.Teenagers Tony and Maria, despite having affiliations with rival street gangs, the Jets and Sharks, fall in love in 1950s New York City.
I get very anxious when films get made too many times and WSS is definitely a musical thats well known and been done everywhere. Although with this particular one, Im interested to see what the legendary Steven Spielburg will create from it. As well as having the lovely Ansel Elgort play Tony - I've loved him for ages! I am ready for a more in depth trailer to be released.
And that is it for now! Keep checking back to see what Ive added and links to any reviews of movies on here that I eventually end up seeing!
Thanks for reading XX
